Frogs Galore!!

Long Meadow Conservation Area

The backwater installed a few years ago is now a favourite home for the local frogs.  The addition of this small pond has greatly increased the biodiversity of the meadow.  It has been noted that a heron is now a frequent visitor, looking for a task meal?

September 2020:
During ‘lockdown’ and the continuing trying times the Gardens have been a source of pleasure and peaceful tranquillity to so many.  Visitor numbers have soared, some discovering this gem for the first time.  The following poem was written this year by a regular visitor, it does capture the all year magic of the garden.
Picture
A very special garden
Within these four walls an unfolding story;
Each taking their turn to unravel their glory.
Ephemeral balance and a great sense of peace,
A floral palette in this masterpiece.
A week or two’s heyday, but then they withdraw,
As another on cue takes to the floor.
Protagonists emerge as the novel unfolds;
Revealing their truths as the story is told.
Fun in naming the ones that we know,
And spotting the buds just beginning to grow
The satin of petals lit by the sun;
Texture and colour harmonising as one.
Peace from abundance and much loving care:
A garden like poetry, and one we can share.
Grateful for this natural beauty and art
That brightens our days and touches our hearts.

4th Eastcote Scouts volunteer in Long Meadow
Friday 19th July 2019

The Friends of Eastcote House Gardens once again welcomed the 4th Eastcote Scouts to Long Meadow for a litter pick. It was a rather damp evening, but this did not deter the group from tackling their task with enthusiasm. In total, three sacks of litter plus a car tyre were removed from the meadow.
A big thank you to the Scouts for helping to keep Eastcote looking clean and tidy - what a pity those who throw the litter do not have the same pride in where they live...

Heathrow Expansion Consultation

This consultation closes on March 4th.

The consultation covers the extra flight paths for the third runway.
ALSO THE PROPOSED CHANGES TO THE USE OF THE TWO EXISTING RUNWAYS WHETHER OR NOT THE THIRD RUNWAY GOES AHEAD [ Independent Parallel Approaches (IPA)].

Both the third runway and the proposed changes to the use of the existing runways will affect all of us badly. As ever the information available and the public exhibitions leave out more than they put in.
The Civil Aviation Authority [CAA] states the following:-
·       ‘Heathrow already impacts more people than any other airport in Europe’
·       ‘Over 55 decibels of noise is ‘significantly annoying to those who live and work near the airport’
There are many consultation documents, if you can find them, each giving part of the story.

The use of the runways depends on wind speed and direction. Therefore, whatever is promised, the weather conditions will over ride such promises. So, residents can never be sure when they are going to be deafened.
Currently there is no ban on night flying to and from Heathrow, any breaks are voluntary. Last departures are around 11pm, early arrivals are coming in at 4.30am. Which means if lucky we will be allowed 5.5 hours sleep per night. How generous of Heathrow Limited! The time could be less if there have been delays and catch up time is needed.
According to the exhibition documentation there will be up to 25 flights per hour between 6am -7am, one every 3 minutes, all above 60 decibels, they do not say how many decibels above. Only the quietest planes will be used.[ Is there any such thing a quite aircraft?] The ‘quietest’ planes according to Heathrow Limited, are Boeing and Airbus.
National Air Traffic Control [NATS] gives figures for both Boeing and Airbus all of which exceed 60 decibels by a long way. 70 decibels is the most common. Weather and atmospheric conditions can also increase the noise level.
60 decibels is equal to a noisy office.
70 is equal to a vacuum cleaner at 1 metre.
This of course is just noise level, vibration has not been monitored.
The questionnaire asks very silly questions such as Q2, would you prefer to have longer periods of respite less frequently (all day on some days but no relief on other days) or a shorter period of respite (e.g. 4-5 hours a day) Please tell us the reasons for your preference. Please provide any other comments or suggestions you have on runway and airspace alternation.

I would suggest the answer to this and all the other similar questions is,
‘We do not want any flights over our towns and villages at any time day or night.’ All proposals in the documentation are not  acceptable.

The Airports National Policy Statement [ANPS] will allow Heathrow to have a maximum extra 260.000 traffic movements per year.[ATMs] This bringing total to 480,000 ATMs per year, with the third runway.
However, should the third runway not go ahead, Heathrow will continue to use the IPA on the two runways. Thereby, bringing more residential areas under flight paths. See Making use of our existing runways. www.heathrowconsultation.com
The noise will not only disrupt use of our homes, it will disrupt use of gardens, open spaces, schools, every conceivable part of our lives. Including our Colne Valley Regional Park, the proposals will make parts of the park unusable and be detrimental to wildlife.
Those who already live under flight paths will have even more flights to cope with.

It is vital as many people as possible send in their views. This can be done in three ways, via the online consultation document, which I have heard is very difficult to navigate. By email, feedback@heathrowconsultation.com or by a paper form. The attached leaflet gives more contacts for obtaining more information.
Where ever you live in Hillingdon you will be affected by any of these changes.
As well as taking part in the consultation please write to your MP.
Nick Hurd- Ruislip, Northwood & Pinner – nick.hurd.mp@parliament.uk
Boris Johnson – Uxbridge & South Ruislip – boris.johnson.mp@parliament.uk
John McDonnel – Hayes & Harlington – mcdonnelj@parliament.uk

Nick Hurd is surprised at the lack of correspondence he has had on this matter from constituents, please write to your MP the more objections the more they can complain.

If we do not answer this consultation when it comes to the inquiry, Heathrow can say residents did not take part so do not mind what happens.
DON’T LET THEM GET AWAY WITH IT.
PLEASE PASS THIS INFORMATION TO YOUR FAMILY, FRIENDS, NEIGHBOURS PLUS ANY ONE WHO MIGHT BE AFFECTED BY THIS LUNACY.

One final thought, Airbus has stopped production of the giant A380, because of lack of sales. It was stated that Airlines want smaller planes so that they can use regional airports. Passengers can go directly to their destination without having to change at a hub airport, e.g. Heathrow.
It would appear that this project will be a white elephant before long, all the more reason to oppose it now.
PLEASE REPLY TO THE CONSULTATION BEFORE 4TH MARCH 2019.

Lesley Crowcroft
Chairman - Eastcote Conservation Panel

7th December 2018

Fifteen corporate volunteers from Toshiba, Stockley Park visited Eastcote House Gardens to help plant out a section of Pamela Gardens boundary.  Not deterred by rain, they assisted FEHG volunteers to plant 44 shrubs/trees both native and cultivated to provide spring colour and some bearing berries in the autumn.  After a coffee break they barrowed and raked chips on the edge of the entranced drive.

The group were given a guided tour of the Dovecote and a short history of Eastcote House by Lesley.

Thanks go to the FEHG volunteers who helped with the Group, Tony Swan, Malcolm, Liz, Alison, Laura, Jim and Dave P and to Linda Wells and Doris for getting the refreshments ready on time.

The corporate volunteers said that they enjoyed their visit and had learned about tree planting.

A rare occurrence for Eastcote:  snow fell and settled.  This brought forth the rarely seen snowman hoards. These creatures come in all shapes and sizes and are an endangered species.  Fortunately, Eastcote Residents’ Association's roving photographer, David Harper was on hand to capture on camera these elusive creatures.

Saturday 9th September 2017:

The Friends of Eastcote House Gardens entered the Fruit section of the show for the first time this year. They were awarded 3 seconds, 3 thirds and I fourth out of 8 entries.  The main opposition in the fruit class is Gerry Edwards who always produces the most wonderful fruit.  Gerry is also the Chairman of EHS and can be seen announcing the winners at the show.

In the flower and herb section 6 firsts, 8 seconds and 2 thirds were gained out of 18 entries.
Congratulations to the show committee and the gardener’s for growing the fruit and flowers.

August 2017:
It was thanks to the speedy action of our Site Manager, Nick Porter, that a group of Travellers was stopped from entering EHG on Friday, 4th August 2017 and their stay in Long Meadow was curtailed.

Hillingdon has measures in place to deal with this type of incursion onto open land.
If you see an ‘invasion’ onto any open land, park, grass verge etc, please make two phone calls:
  1. Dial 999 and report to the Police.
  2. Contact Hillingdon Council on 01895 250111 and report the incident.  Hillingdon will then deploy Security contractors who can issue a Section 61 notice, which gives those illegally camped notice to quit by a certain time.  If the area has not been cleared by the allotted time, they can then be evicted. So the sooner the notice is served the sooner we get rid of them.

Green Flag Award:
Wonderful news:  Long Meadow, a Site of Importance for Nature Conservation, has been awarded Green Flag status 2017.

Eastcote House Gardens 2018 Calendar is available from lesley.crowcroft@gmail.com or at Open Days.  No increase of price:  a bargain at only £5.00

New Homes on Long Meadow

Thanks to a suggestion by the Deputy Mayoress Mrs Fiona Morgan, nesting boxes for kestrels and tawny owls will be installed in Long Meadow.  Funding for the new homes will come from the Robert Symes Fund administered by Northwood Hills Residents’ Association.  FEHG installed nesting boxes for smaller birds in EHG earlier this year;  all residences were soon snapped up.  The boxes were made by the volunteers at the Rural Activities Garden Centre.

The Case is Altered
'The Case', as many will know, is currently closed for an extension and renovation by its current owners, City Inns.  The inevitability of such changes isn't being challenged;  indeed the owners have many properties that have retained their original character as much as possible.

However, they are planning to change the name of this unusually named pub, that is 250 or more years old.
There is no legal requirement for this company to keep the name ‘The Case is Altered’.
It is down to people power to try to stop this city firm from changing the name.  Please sign the petition below and inform your friends, family, colleagues, groups of the need to make a big noise.

For more information, click here.

STOP PRESS:
People power has won!  Having realised the strength of support for such a unique name, the new owners have announced that they will retain it.

Eastcote Connections

This book paints a picture of over thirty individuals or families carrying either fame or being notable people that have lived or worked in Eastcote since the times when Eastcote was a hamlet within the parish of Ruislip to the more recent times when Eastcote developed pretty much as we see Eastcote today.  This Friends of Eastcote House Gardens Community Archive publication is the first time that a description of such people has been brought together in such a way in a single publication.

Featured are those of historic importance whether that is locally, nationally or indeed internationally.  Eastcote has been connected with notable people from all walks of life be they artists, classical or popular musicians, actors, theologians, war time heroes and inventors, diplomats, financial giants sportsmen or sportswomen or from the secret world of intelligence gathering and others as well.  There is something for everyone and not just those with an interest in history.

October 29th 2016:
The FEHG held a very successful quiz night in the stables, attracting a maximum capacity of 48 quizzers in teams of six.

The evening comprised of eight rounds of ten questions, along with a ‘marathon round’ running all evening. This was accompanied by an entertaining game of ‘Heads and Tails’ during the comfort break, and of course a raffle at the end.  The winning team received a bottle of wine each, with the lowest scorers being presented with the dubious honour of a 'wooden spoon' each.

The evening successfully raised over £300 towards the upkeep and maintenance of the walled gardens.  FEHG would like to thank all who attended and hope you enjoyed the evening

Once a proud part of Eastcote’s history and heritage, Haydon Hall was demolished in the 1960s just a few years after Eastcote House was pulled down.  Haydon Hall and Eastcote House sometimes shared the same history, not surprising given that the grand buildings were just a few hundred yards apart.
The story of Haydon Hall begins in the 1630s for the most colourful of reasons.  Lady Alice Dowager Countess of Derby considered it imperative to have a further property built, despite her existing home in Harefield.  This book reveals some fascinating details about life at times in Elizabethan England.  Haydon Hall underwent two substantial developments and rebuilds and the book captures such details and provides a timeline of the people who lived in Haydon Hall and the estate.
Purchased by the Ruislip Northwood Urban District Council before WWII and scheduled for demolition, the house was saved with the outbreak of war and was used during the war and during the Cold War for civil defence purposes.  The grounds of Haydon Hall now serve as the home of Eastcote Cricket Club and the Eastcote Billiards and Snooker Club, as well as providing day nursery facilities.
Priced at just £5, this Friends of Eastcote House Gardens Community Archive publication is available from andy_weller@hotmail.co.uk (that is an underscore) and Lesley.Crowcroft@gmail.com.  Postage within the UK is £1.51.  Overseas postage varies depending on the destination country and whether sent by airmail or the slightly cheaper surface mail, with much longer delivery times to non-European destinations.

This Friends of Eastcote House Gardens book provides details of when the former Government site in Eastcote [RAF Eastcote] served such an important role as an outstation for the code breaking operations at Bletchley Park in WWII.  This includes personal memories from former Wrens when the site was designated as Pembroke V ‘the concrete ship in dry dock’. Eastcote also played a vital role in WWII when Lady Anderson’s house, Eastcote Place was used by RAF Northolt as an Alternative Operations Room and later by the U.S. Army Air Force.  Andy Weller is grateful for the generous cooperation of the RAF’s historian at RAF Northolt in bringing this story to life.

After the war RAF Eastcote was the first home for GCHQ during the Cold War.  The site then operated in two parts.  At the Eastcote Road end all branches of the U.S.military at some time used the site.  At the Lime Grove end the site was used for UK Government purposes.  These aspects are covered in the book and the author Andy Weller worked on the site in the 1980s.

Priced at £10, all money goes to the Friends of Eastcote House Gardens.  Copies of the book are available from lesley.crowcroft@gmail.com or andy_weller@hotmail.co.uk

This book and our previous title ‘Eastcote House and Gardens: The People and the Place’ will be available at future Friends of Eastcote House Gardens events.

Conservation News - HMS Pembroke V commemorated:

The Mayor of Hillingdon Cllr Catherine Dann, unveiled a plaque on Thursday 20th November 2014, at the new housing estate Pembroke Park, Eastcote Road, Eastcote.

During WWII the site, purchased from the Warrender family by the Ministry of Defence, became the off-shoot of Bletchley Park.  Over 800 Wrens worked here decoding messages from the German Enigma machine.

All the names of the roads and blocks of flats are named after those who pioneered early the computing machines.

For several years after the War, the site was the original home of GCHQ.  Later, RAF Eastcote housed members of the USAF.

The old huts may have disappeared under piles of brick and concrete, but the memory will linger on thanks to the efforts of Susan Toms, Ruislip, Northwood & Eastcote Local History Society and Chris Groom, Eastcote Residents' Association, who worked with Taylor Wimpey to produce this memorial.

Serving Members of RAF Northolt, British Legion members, and many members of the public attended the ceremony.

Paris Marathon Update:
On Sunday 6 April Raquel Russel Ponte (71 years old) ran the Paris Marathon in 5hrs 56 to raise money for Eastcote House Gardens.  Raquel said that she was pleased with her time as it was an unexpectedly tough run.  The beginning of the day was hot, and there was no water provided at start.  By the time she reached the first water station there was no water left there either! At around midday the cloud came over the sky and the wind picked up.  Normally this would be a welcomed development as the temperature drops, but the wind was gusting Saharan sand into the runners' lungs!   Despite all these extra hurdles Raquel finished in time to enjoy a well-deserved glass of French wine.

Raquel would like to thank all those who sponsored her.  Knowing that she was raising money for a great local cause helped her to power over the finishing line.  Once Raquel has collected all the money she will let us know how much she has raised.  If you have not sponsored Raquel yet but would like to please email:  lesley.crowcroft@gmail.com

A wonderful floral display is planted twice yearly by Hillingdon Council, but the rear of the garden had become rather tired and in places overgrown.

Tree Work - Commencing 27th March 2014:
A message from the Green Spaces Team.  Tree work will start on Thursday 27th March in preparation for the exciting restoration project at Eastcote House Gardens, due to begin late summer.  A number of trees will be removed to enable the development to take place.  Although a total of 37 trees will be removed, all will be replaced with new trees at a ratio of 2 new trees to every 1 lost.  The development has been carefully designed to allow the retention of the most important trees.  New species will be selected to enhance the park and plantings.

EHG and the Paris Marathon:
Stunning news!  One of the supporters of Eastcote House Gardens will be running in the Paris Marathon on 6th April 2014.  Raquel Russel Ponte of Eastcote has loved the gardens all her life, and has offered to donate all her sponsor monies to the Restoration Fund.  This is a most generous offer from Raquel who is now aged 71.  Please will you support Raquel and Eastcote House Gardens?  Click here for a sponsor form if you would like to collect from friends, colleagues etc.  Or please get in touch via the Contact Us page.

50 years of Britain in Bloom:
2014 marks the 50th Anniversary of Britain in Bloom.  To celebrate this event, the RHS are giving away sunflower seeds to groups who have taken part in various 'Bloom' activities in past years.  FEHG have applied and will receive their seeds in April, with a special planting day, weather and ground conditions permitting, on Thursday April 17th 2014.

Friends of Eastcote House Gardens Invited to City Hall:
The FEHG were invited to a reception at City Hall for Environmental Volunteers on Thursday 6th February 2014.  Five members of the Friends attended, and battled through a strike affected underground.  Darren Johnson AM, Chair of the London Assembly, addressed the various groups from all over London.
His reason for inviting us was to say thank you for all the work put in across the Capital by environmental volunteers.  He went on to say that London's Green Spaces are under considerable pressure, with cutbacks in spending available for Parks and Open Spaces, with the growing population which equates to more people need more homes and also open space.  If the Green Spaces are built upon then there is less open space, so he endorses building on 'brown field' land to save our open spaces.

Stop Press - February 15th:
In view of the recent wet and windy weather, the volunteers at EHG have been forced to postpone our usual gardening activities.  We don't mind getting wet and muddy - that's part of the fun of gardening - but the conditions underfoot make it rather hazardous, and given the state of the soil, we would do more harm than good by trampling on it.  So please bear with us;  we are frustrated that we can't get on with our usual work, but hopefully the weather will change soon and we'll be back to normal.  And if you do decide to visit the Gardens, please take particular care as the grounds - even the paths - are very slippery.

Waitrose continues to support Eastcote House Gardens:
Waitrose, Northwood, have raised £300.00 for the projects at Eastcote House Gardens and Long Meadow, in the January 2014 Community Matters.  Our thanks to Waitrose and to all who supported EHG.

Another great success for the Eastcote House Gardens Christmas Quiz:
Thanks to the efforts of our Quiz Master Tony Bucksey, the EHG seasonal quiz raised £90.00 for the Restoration Fund.  Entries came from around the country including Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Norfolk.
Thank you all for taking part.  Details of the next eagerly awaited quiz will published in the New Year and can be downloaded from this website.

On Monday May 20th 2013, the Ruislip, Northwood & Eastcote Local History Society held a special evening to support the Eastcote House Gardens Restoration Fund.

Former Conservation Panel Chairman recognised:

The Leader of the Council, Ray Puddifoot MBE, has given a special dispensation for the footbridge connecting Eastcote House Gardens to Long Meadow to be named for Sheila Liberty, former Chairman of the Eastcote Conservation Panel.  Sheila worked tirelessly for Eastcote, saving the Walled Garden from demolition in the 1980s.  Sheila had the the first proper footbridge installed in 1977;  previously the crossing was a rather precarious tree trunk.

A plaque commemorating Sheila's life and work was unveiled on May 5th by the Mayor of Hillingdon, Cllr. Mike Markham.  There was also an exhibition dedicated to Sheila Liberty in the Stables.  This was part of the first Vintage Tea Gardens event of the year.  (See the Photos page for further details.)

Bid for Heritage Lottery Funding:

On February 28th 2013, the stage two bid was submitted to the Heritage Lottery Fund.  The total amount needed is £1.6 million. This will enable us to restore the Stables, Dovecote and the Walled Garden, plus a new building to house Tea Rooms and toilets.  The decision will be made known in June....  Watch this Space!
